Best Wines for Summer Drinking
melissa • June 9, 2020

If you ask us, there’s almost no better way to relax and enjoy a warm summer afternoon than with a glass of wine, and some wines naturally complement the long days and high heat better than others. Additionally, summer drinking wines need to pair well with grilled fare and seafood. White wines are often popular selections in the summer for their bite and their chemistry with seafood. Generally, a summer wine should have high acidity and dryness, have a light or medium body, and feature sweet or fruity notes like citrus or honeycomb.

If you’re ready to bask in the summer sun but can’t go to a wine tasting in Hartford, the experts at Jonathan Edwards are here to offer some guidance to help you pick the perfect wine. These are some of the varietals best suited for summer drinking:

Riesling

This white wine finds its roots in the Rhine region of Germany and is one of the most popular varieties for summer drinking. Riesling grapes are sweet and highly aromatic, so much so that they have been described as “perfume-like.” Riesling usually exhibits aromas of tropical fruit and flowers, making it a refreshing drink on a warm evening. Riesling is also very versatile when it comes to food pairings, making it an ideal table wine. It is highly compatible with white fish and pork, as well as spicier, more intense flavors like those featured in Thai cuisine. JE’s delicious 2017 Riesling has a delicate sweetness marked by peach and honey on the pallet, and aromas of orange blossom. Best served chilled, this is truly an ideal wine for enjoying in the summer.

Pinot Grigio

Pinot Grigio, also known as pinot gris or grauburgunder, is a white grape varietal originating from the Burgundy region of France. Pinot Grigio grapes got their name because they grow in bunches resembling pine cones. Different regions throughout the world produce varying styles of pinot grigio grapes with different flavor profiles. Italian styles of this wine are typically more acidic and feature a lighter body, while the Alsace region of France produces a fuller, spicier grape with lower acidity. Pinot Grigio grapes often feature tropical flavor notes such as mango and melon. In Italy, it is common for these grapes to be harvested early to preserve acidity and balance out their natural sweetness. JE’s 2018 Pinot Grigio is aged for 8 months in stainless steel and features peach and floral notes that are refreshing yet vibrant.

Sauvignon Blanc

Originating in France’s Bordeaux region, Sauvignon Blanc is a classic summer wine that has seen a surge in popularity in recent years. The flavor of these grapes depends on the climate in which they’re grown. Cooler growing conditions often yield higher acidity and grassiness, while warmer temperatures tend to be less aromatic and feature more tropical notes. An ideal summer wine, Sauvignon Blanc drinks great chilled and makes an excellent pairing with cheese or fish. Our 2018 Sauvignon Blanc has a very clean finish and is marked by notes of lemon and crisp apple.

Summer is a great time for cookouts, vineyard walks, and other outdoor activities. Having the right wine to tie a meal together can take a warm summer evening from good to great.
