How to Host a Wine Tasting Party
melissa • June 28, 2023

Hosting a wine-tasting party is an excellent way to bring friends together for an enjoyable and sophisticated experience. Whether you're a wine aficionado or simply appreciate good wine, organizing a wine-centric gathering can be both fun and educational. In this guide, our experts at Jonathan Edwards Winery explore the key elements to consider when hosting a wine-tasting party, from selecting the perfect bottle of wine to creating delightful wine and cheese pairings. So grab your favorite glass, and let's dive in!

Set the Stage

A wine-tasting party is a fantastic way to introduce your guests to a variety of wines and engage their senses. Start by curating a diverse selection of wines, including classics like Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. Encourage guests to bring a bottle of wine to contribute to the tasting experience, or stock a few good wines for beginners to ensure everyone has something to try. Want to take your party up a notch? If you’re among fellow wine aficionados, consider hosting a blind tasting, where guests have to guess the wine's varietal or region. This adds an element of friendly competition and enhances everyone's wine knowledge.

The Guest List

When inviting guests to your wine-tasting party, consider their wine preferences and level of wine knowledge, whether they’re total novices or know everything there is to know about the difference between wines. Aim for a diverse group with varying levels of expertise to foster engaging conversations.

The Right Glass Matters

Ensure you have an assortment of wine glasses available for your guests. Different wines require specific glassware to enhance their aromas and flavors. For example, use taller glasses for red wines like Cabernet Sauvignon to allow the wine to breathe, while smaller, narrower glasses are ideal for white wines like Chardonnay, preserving their delicate aromas.

Wine and Cheese Pairings

Elevate your wine-tasting party by incorporating wine and cheese pairings. Select a range of cheeses that complement different wines, such as creamy Brie with Chardonnay or sharp Cheddar with Cabernet Sauvignon. Label each cheese and provide tasting notes to guide your guests' palates. This combination of flavors will impress even the most discerning wine enthusiasts.

Food and Wine Pairings

Enhance the tasting experience by offering carefully selected food pairings. Consider small plates of hors d'oeuvres or tapas that complement the wines being served. For example, a Pinot Noir pairs wonderfully with grilled salmon or mushroom crostini, while a Cabernet Sauvignon can be enjoyed with hearty beef sliders or aged cheeses. Experiment with different pairings to create a memorable culinary journey for your guests.

Create an Unforgettable Atmosphere

Transform your space into a tasteful and inviting setting by incorporating wine-themed decorations. Use wine barrels as tables or create centerpieces with grapevine wreaths and fresh flowers. Soft lighting, soothing background music, and comfortable seating will further enhance the ambiance, setting the stage for an unforgettable wine-centric event.

Enjoy Great Wine & Great Company!

Hosting a wine-tasting party can be a delightful and enriching experience for both you and your guests. By curating a selection of fine wines, engaging in blind tastings, and pairing them with delicious foods, you'll create a memorable and tasteful event. Remember to consider your guest list and provide the appropriate glassware for each wine. With these tips, you're well on your way to hosting a wine-tasting party that will be the talk of the town. Jonathan Edwards Winery fondly wishes you good company, great wine, and a truly remarkable evening!

It's a well-known fact that fine wine only gets better with age — however, whether or not you will experience the exceptional flavors and aromas of matured wine can depend greatly on how you choose to store it. There are several wine bottle storage factors that can influence how well your wine ages in the long term and if you will be able to enjoy it to its full potential in the future. To ensure your wine collection is kept in optimal condition for your enjoyment, let's review the best way to store wine and why. Avoid Light An important wine storage tip everyone should know is to keep the bottles in dark locations. UV rays from the sun and light from manmade illumination can heat wine and cause its amino acids to oxidize, making it age prematurely. Wine bottles without a dark tint color are even more vulnerable to light exposure, so it's always best to store bottles in areas away from the light. Wrapping your wine bottles can help shield them from light exposure if you need an extra layer of protection. Store in a Horizontal Position One of the best ways to store wine is horizontally. When stored sideways, the cork is kept in constant contact with the wine itself. This allows the cork to remain moist and prevents it from drying out. Should the cork crack or become dry, then air will be able to enter the bottle and cause the wine to undergo oxidation — altering the wine's taste as a result. While horizontal placement may not be necessary for bottles without natural corks, this method is an efficient use of space that creates room for more storage. Maintain the Right Temperature Keeping an eye on the temperature is also essential for proper wine storage. It's best to keep your bottle around 55 degrees Fahrenheit, as temperatures above 70 degrees can cause the wine to age faster and rob it of its flavors and aromas. However, low temperatures aren't good for wine storage either. Cold conditions can dry out the corks and cause air to enter, and if the wine freezes, it could expand in size and force the cork out. Likewise, it's in your interest not to expose your wine bottles to frequent temperature changes. Any fluctuations can make the cork expand and contract, allowing air to enter and oxidize the wine. Therefore, maintaining a consistent temperature is ideal for helping wine last longer. Watch Humidity Levels Another environmental condition that can affect your wine is the humidity levels. Anywhere between 50 to 80 percent humidity is preferred for wine storage, as levels too high or too low can cause problems. Humidity is important for keeping the cork moist and preventing air from leaking in — but, if the environment you store wine in becomes too moist, it can lead to mold growth.
