Do you love wine? If you have a true passion for all things vino and love to show off your taste preferences, you should definitely consider starting a wine collection.
Contrary to what movies and TV might have you believe, you don’t need a wine cellar, a snooty attitude, or a million-dollar salary to become a wine collector. All you need to get into the hobby is a few bottles of great wine and a safe place to store them. Consider this your quick and easy guide to collecting wine!
Explore Your Personal Taste
Before you begin your wine collection, sample a variety of different wines to establish your taste preferences. Whether you start with the best beginner red wines or just pick something at random to try, be sure to keep detailed tasting notes. Using a spreadsheet can help with this task, plus you’ll be able to use the search function to quickly find information about previously purchased wines.
While you’re wine-tasting, take every step to enjoy the full experience. Swirl the glass and inhale deeply to get the full flavor and feel of the wine. After all, tasting the wine is one of the best parts of having a wine collection!
Factors of Distinction
Just because some wine collectors choose only the most valuable wines for their collection doesn’t mean that your collection must be based on price. Determining what will define your wine collection is highly personal, and you can always change your mind, too. Are you considering collecting local wines in your area or a specific selection made from a certain grape? Are you looking for older wines or contemporary products? Some people specifically look for unusual or rare wines, while others focus on wine made in a particular global climate. Still, others collect vintaged champagnes rather than traditional wines. There’s no wrong way to wine shop, and there are wines available for every budget. Do what makes you happy!
Store With Care
As mentioned before, you don’t need a special wine cellar built under your house to store your wines. However, you can’t just leave the bottles on your kitchen counter, either. Exposure to light, air, and humidity will degrade the quality of wine, so it’s important to keep your bottles away from these conditions. Here’s a quick guide to what you should do:
Shut Out the Light
Even if you have no intentions of letting your wine age for 20 years, never let the sun shine on a bottle of wine! Instead, keep your wine in a cool, dark place with limited temperature fluctuations, such as a closet or basement.
Lay ‘Em Down
If you do plan on keeping your bottles for several years, it’s best to store corked wines horizontally so that the cork stays in contact with the wine. However, if your wine has a screw cap or glass cap, it can be stored in any position.
Forgo the Fridge
You may be tempted to keep your wine in the fridge, but it’s best to avoid doing so for longer than a few months at a time. The changing humidity of the refrigerator can affect the integrity of the corks and cause them to degrade, which lets air into your wine bottles.
